How curiosity and cutting-edge tech power data analytics at DRW

From sports analytics to cutting-edge financial markets, Paul’s journey to DRW is driven by curiosity, problem-solving, and a passion for data. As a Data Analyst in our Montreal office, Paul plays a key role in helping DRW stay ahead in an ever-evolving competitive landscape.

Transition from university to DRW

Upon graduating from university, I was really drawn to the cutting edge technology DRW uses and the chance to be surrounded by people who are not only highly skilled but genuinely passionate about what they do. My background was in sports analytics, but I wanted to push myself into a completely different world: finance. DRW seemed like the perfect environment to grow in.

During my interview, my (now current) manager’s enthusiasm stood out; they were clearly invested in helping me learn and develop my career. I was also inspired by DRW’s values — especially the focus on quickly adapting in a fast moving industry and staying committed to continual growth, both in formal training and in everyday collaboration. That kind of culture felt like somewhere I could really thrive.

Day to day: data, strategy, and problem-solving

My focus is competitor analysis. We work to identify who our competitors are, understand what strategies they might be using, and figure out how we can maintain or extend our edge. Most of my day is spent deep in data where I’m analyzing large sets of post event information, investigating issues, and turning that into actionable insights for the team. It’s a mix of detective work and problem solving.

Key skills for data analysts at DRW

For those interested in a data analyst role at DRW, I recommend three essential skills:

  1. Strong analytical thinking – The ability to cut through complexity, recognize patterns, and turn raw data into clear, actionable insights.
  2. Technical proficiency – Comfort with programming languages, data analysis tools, and statistical methods helps analysts be effective from day one and adapt quickly to new challenges.
  3. Attention to detail – Small discrepancies or subtle shifts in data can make a big difference. Often, those tiny details lead to a real competitive edge.

Advice for aspiring data analysts

The best advice I have for someone interested in a similar role is to keep practicing what excites you. For me, that means regularly exploring new tools, whether it’s AI or other emerging technologies, and figuring out which ones are actually useful in solving real problems. At DRW, there’s a lot of freedom to develop your skills, but it’s up to you to take initiative and apply what you learn in a meaningful way. Staying hands on and curious will keep your work fresh and your skills sharp.

Why Montreal?

My favorite thing about the Montreal office has to be the people. Everyone is friendly, approachable, and genuinely happy to help each other out. Walking into the office and being greeted with a smile makes a big difference to the workday. Plus, the catered breakfast and lunch are definitely a nice bonus! But really, it’s the sense of community that makes it special. You get the feeling that everyone is pulling in the same direction, and that’s hugely motivating.

Summary

Paul’s journey reflects what makes DRW unique: a place where curiosity is encouraged, data drives impact, and people are invested in each other’s growth. From tackling complex problems to collaborating with talented teammates in a supportive environment, his experience highlights how DRW empowers early-career talent to learn quickly, take ownership, and make a meaningful contribution. It’s that combination of cutting-edge work, strong community, and continual development that makes DRW a place where careers can truly thrive.
